A Prayer to Remember

St. Francis of Assisi

The Serenity Prayer

This prayer came to mind when writing for the month of October. The Serenity prayer is a timeless ask for help from the Lord in times of need. There are many others, of course, but I think this one is very special.

In its simplicity, it says so much about man’s failings. A humble prayer request for mindful peace, especially when we try to persevere through lifes trials. This prayer reminds us that we cannot change everything, know everything, or are as wise as we would wish. In it, we ask for the ability to keep counsel on how to treat others and find strength within ourselves, especially when trials and tribulations persist and perseverance is needed.

I hope you will agree.

God grant me the Serenity

To Accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change those things I can,

And the Wisdom to know the difference.

  1. I, Delia, was first introduced to this insightful prayer 33 years ago. Meditated on a daily basis, it blossomed and opened up my life to unimaginable options. While visiting my oldest son in St Martin during his first year of Medical School, I happened upon an article he had written, as the head of the student body, to the incoming class of doctors to be. Via line by line of the Serenity Prayer, he had told these new students how he had gotten through his first year of Medical School with an ease he never thought
possible. I was in tears as I finished his article and so very proud of his intuition. My son had learned by experience the a viable lesson of getting trough life with more serenity than strife. Today, some 20 years later, a framed copy of The Serenity Prayer sits prominently on his desk.
