'Fear is the mind killer'
This is one of the many quotes from this wonderful novel by Frank Herbert,
DUNE. Paul Atreides, of the House Atreides, has a
destiny to fulfill. He finds this on the planet Arrakis, where the mining of
the drug melange and the acceptance of the Fremen who teach him more than any textbook ever
could, is worth fighting and dying for. Is he Muad'dib? Is he the Kwisatz
Haderach?
When I read this book in the 1980s, I was
transfixed with the narrative of a family's need to survive on a desolate
planet. The language, the worms, the intense blue eyes, and the story of trust
and love were so immersive. The movie, starring Kyle McLaughlin, does the book
justice, but the remake is being touted as even more so.
For those of you who have no interest in reading
science fiction, not to worry. This book is considered soft science fiction and
worth reading for the intrigue and the relevant theme in invokes of which we live today. Scholars have
made similarities to this book and our continued involvement in the
middle-east. More relevant now because of our withdrawal from that
region. To read more about this please, click here.
Frank Herbert's book, and the series he created
afterward, stand the testament of time. I hope you read and enjoy.
