Story of the Red Rose

There are many variations to the story and origin of the Red Rose. This is mine, with love.

Story of the Red Rose

One day, long ago, a young girl received twelve White Roses from a lover who had died tragically in an accident shortly before the roses had arrived. So strong was her grief upon receiving the news and the roses that her tears turned the White Roses – red.

Fearful family members withdrew from the sight and called for the local priest. The priest blessed these ‘red’ roses so that they might help ease her grief.  Alas, she died not long afterward from a broken heart. The priest buried the ‘red’ roses in his garden to hide them from curious villagers least, they claim the young, innocent girl a Heretic.

To his amazement, roses sprang up everywhere and gradually overtook his garden. Astonished as he was, he was proud because his garden was so beautiful with variations on the shade of red. Pink, White, and variegated colors of all shades, but red was the most abundant. His garden was the pride and joy of the village.

Through the ages, the red rose has flourished, and it’s just as well. When a lady receives red roses and is inevitably reduced to tears because of the sentiment and beauty, the red rose will no longer betray her grief or joy by turning red from her tears.

Origins of the Red Rose story

See the Roses
Blooming yonder?
Far from dead leave.
Thou the flower,
I the dry grass
Far
From
Thee.
