1984 by George Orwell

1984

Winston Smith is torn. His personal ideology of what should be collides with the ideology of Oceania, where 2 plus 2 is 5. Really? How interesting that in today’s America, much of this is echoed.

Ever wonder where the term Big Brother comes from? This book. Written in 1948 by George Orwell, 1984 (notice the reverse in the last two numbers) is a dystopian version of a society that suffers the consequences of totalitarianism, constant surveillance, and repressive indoctrination of persons and behaviors. The authoritarian government of Stalinist Russia is the model. The novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated.

We derive so many similarities and parallels from this work of fiction, which seems to apply to today’s way of life. Orwellian is the term thrown around today when we consider the works written by this brilliant author of socially conscience books such as Animal Farm and his most famous 1984. Be that as it may, there is a lot to learn and/or consider in these works as we try to find our footing when slipping ever further away from our democratic way of life and values in America.
