To Mom (On Her Birthday)

This was written for my mother years ago. So, on her special day, be our time together long or short, I want to post this as a daughter's tribute to all the mothers who've helped their girls become the women they are today. And, for those who wonder just how 'Mom' might have been...as a young girl.

For my Mom

What were you like as a girl?

Did you tell silly jokes?

Did you laugh out loud?
Did you have big dreams,
Gazing up at the clouds?

Did you walk barefoot,
In grass of dew?
Did you like sunshine,
Or soft rain too?
Did you have lots of friends,
Or wonderful grades?
Were you popular and shy,
 Or unafraid?

Did boys hide from you?
Or you from them?
Did you keep many secrets?
Or tell on a whim?
Did you run with abandon,
Or just skip along?
Did you dream of prince charming,
Or sing crazy songs?

Were you often sad and lonely,
Wishing for better days?
Did you question life’s purpose?

Have you ever lost your way?

If you ponder life’s mysteries
Of where that girl has gone,
(You needn’t look very far…)
For she’s here inside me,

Ever safe and strong.
