Recommended Reading: Pompeii

What would you do if confronted by corruption in a violent city like Pompeii?

This recommendation is appropriate for the theme of Authenticity and a very good read worth mentioning. Yes, an ancient city and historical, but this book is not at all like the 2014 movie Pompeii, which is good in its own right. No, this book titled Pompeii by Robert Harris, is something else altogether.

Published in 2003, it is Historical Fiction and tells the story of Marcus Attilius Primus, an engineer who is decent and incorruptible. On the behest of Pliny the elder, he comes to Pompeii to investigate the tremors that have caused the aqueducts to go dry. Historically, Pliny the younger witnesses the destruction of Pompeii and lives to tell the story we have come to understand, but it is Marcus who wades into the corrupt and violent town. Will he, too, escape the mountain’s fury? You’ll need to read to find out. Enjoy!
